Moving into a new home is a major milestone in your life, and it’s only natural that you would be excited and eager to take possession of your new abode. But before you start shifting boxes and ordering furniture it’s important to remain mindful of an often overlooked threat – bed bugs.
These tiny elusive pests often go undetected. Even during a private showing from a realtor it can be easy to miss the tell-tale signs of bed bug activity, and that can quickly turn your dream home into a nightmare. So, to help you protect your investment as well as your peace of mind we’ve put together a comprehensive checklist for new homeowners.
Inspect Before You Move In
Before moving anything into your new home it’s important to perform a detailed inspection of the property. You want to focus primarily on bed bug hot spots, but be sure to give the whole house a good going over. Remember, these pests are small, flat, and excellent at hiding from prying eyes.
- Check the Bedroom First – Even though your new house is empty, previous infestations can leave behind signs. Check along floorboards, carpet edges, and behind wall outlets for signs of bed bug activity.
- Inspect Cracks and Crevices – Bed bugs like to hide in cracks and crevices. Use a flashlight to check any cracks in walls or floors and behind loose wallpaper. If the coast seems clear take some time to seal up the cracks now before you start moving in.
- Look for Tell-Tale Signs of Bed Bugs – Bed bugs leave behind black fecal spots, shed skins and tiny white eggs. Check for these signs throughout the house.
- On-Site Furniture – If the previous owners left behind any furniture it is important to inspect it thoroughly. If you notice signs of bed bugs or you’re unsure of its history you may consider discarding it altogether.
Ask Questions During the Buying Process
Many states across the country have introduced legislation requiring sellers to disclose known past infestations to all prospective buyers. That being said, you need to be proactive and ask the following questions of the seller and/or the realty company representing the property.
- Does the property have a history of bed bug infestations?
- Were any pest control inspections or treatments conducted recently? If so what and when.
- Are there any warranties or service agreements with pest control companies of which you should be aware?
Schedule a Preventative Inspection
If you want to be sure your new home is truly bed bug free you might consider hiring a licensed pest control company to inspect the property before you move in. Canine inspections are highly recommended. Bed bug detection dogs can sniff out infestations even when bed bugs are hiding in remote areas of your home. If any bed bugs are found, early treatment will be easier and more cost effective than waiting until you’re established in your new home.
Unpack with Care
Once you’re ready to move in you will want to take your time unpacking in order to minimize any risks of transferring bed bugs to your new home. The following tips will help simplify the process:
- Inspect all Boxes – This is particularly important if any of your belongings have been in storage or are being delivered by a moving company.
- Keep Items Off the Floor – Use tables or plastic bins when sorting through boxes. Avoid placing clothes or linens directly on the floor.
- Vacuum regularly – Frequent vacuuming can help remove stray bed bugs before they become a problem.
Monitor for Bed bugs
Let’s assume you’ve done your due diligence and have finally moved into your new home. Everything’s unpacked and you’ve settled in. It’s still a good idea to stay alert. The early signs of a bed bug problem can be subtle, so it’s important to keep your eyes open for the following signs:
- Small, itchy bite marks, often in clusters or rows
- Reddish brown spots on sheets or mattresses
- Tiny white eggs or shed skins in cracks and crevices
- A sweet musty odor in heavily infested areas
- Live bugs
For extra protect you might consider installing some bed bug interceptors. These go under your beds and furniture legs and will trap any crawling insects.
If You See a Problem Act Quickly
If, at any point, you suspect you have a growing bed bug infestation it is critical that you respond quickly. The longer you delay the bigger the problem will get.
Remember, bed bug infestations are manageable when caught early. Call in a professional bed bug inspection and removal team to treat the problem. It’s generally best to avoid over-the-counter solutions as these are rarely effective and can, in the long run, make the problem worse.
